ED DAVEY said Nigel Farage is “not a patriot” and claimed the Lib Dems can “hold Reform back” with “less divisive British values.” The Liberal Democrat leader launched his attack on the Reform UK leader as he opened the first day of his party’s conference in Bournemouth.Sir Ed marched through Bournemouth Gardens with a brass band, joined by Dorset Lib Dem MPs Vikki Slade and Edward Morello. He told activists the party would campaign for “change” in tune with “British values” as he arrived in the town for the conference. He said: “When you talk to the vast majority of people who've got decent values, respect for the rule of law, tolerance, who love our country like the Democrats do, they're very worried that we've had governments of Conservative and Labour who've failed them. And they want to see a party that is true to British values, but will change our country.”“These people are worried that Labour and the Tories have failed them,” he said, while Reform UK “want to take us to be more like Trump’s America.”A crowd of supporters carrying Union Jack flags gathered in Bournemouth Gardens as the band played songs including Crocodile Rock, Sweet Caroline and Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.Vikki Slade, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, said the stunt was a show of being “patriotic with joy and laughter.”She said: “Marching into Bournemouth with this incredible band shows that we are here and we are the patriotic party. You don't need to be divisive; you don't need to be negative to be patriotic. And I think we've just shown that we can do that with joy and we can do it with laughter.”As Sir Ed spoke with media afterwards, a man shouted from a distance about migration, saying: “Tell him to get rid of the boats.”The Lib Dem conference launch came on the same day that dozens gathered outside The Roundhouse Hotel, where migrants are housed, to protest against asylum hotels.Responding to the tensions, Sir Ed said: “We've also today called for an emergency over the asylum backlog created by the Conservatives, who should apologise for it. We don't think the new government is doing a good enough job to reduce that backlog. We want nightingale centres, like we saw with COVID, to process these applications really fast.”
